I got soul but I'm not a soldier.

I've discussed haunted items in the past, and a few famous stories of them. I also have my own haunted item stories, this being the most interesting of them so far.

It concerns a Civil War soldier’s uniform button I purchased at a favorite antique store. It was an interesting piece and well within my budget, so I decided to buy it along with a few coins for my boyfriend. I purchased the items and didn’t really feel anything from the button at that point. I had it at home for a few days before bringing it to my boyfriend’s house to show him. At that point nothing odd had occurred in my house. The night I moved it over however was the “super moon.” It was supposed to be the fullest moon we would see in a long time due to the moon being physically closer to the earth when it became full. A fascinating astronomical event, but also very powerful. The energy that night was intense, but I went to bed not really thinking anything would happen.

I was awakened around 3am by sounds in the room. My boyfriend does have cats, and so I generally attributed any nightly noises to them playing or fighting. However after listening to these noises for a minute or so, I realized they weren’t feline in nature. I could hear footsteps and breathing as someone made their way through the room. They were rifling through drawers and moving things around as they searched for something.

At this point I was fairly certain we’d been broken into and were being robbed. My boyfriend kept some things of value in his room and they were located in the very drawers our intruder was looking in. There had also been a pretty serious robbery/murder in the recent past, and I was still on edge at times. I remained frozen in bed, afraid that any movement might alert them that I was awake. The person seemingly dug through everything on that side of the room, at times tossing things to the floor.

After a while this whole scenario struck me as odd. How had the person gotten in? I hadn’t heard the sliding door open or anything break. Unless they had somehow broken in upstairs and come down to the basement, but that didn’t make much sense. How did they know where to look? As the minutes went by I observed the situation more closely, and realized abruptly that this wasn’t a burglar, or at least not a living one.

The interesting thing about ghost encounters is that they are fundamentally not real. Yes they may interact with the real environment, but often when they appear they are missing things. It’s an incomplete picture in some way. A person walks by but you don’t hear any steps, or there’s someone smoking a cigar but no smell. Little things, little hints that this is removed from reality. Sometimes it’s even just a feeling of a disturbance or disconnect with reality. This particular experience seemed so real at first, but something just wasn’t right. Coupled with the question of how they would have gotten in, and the fact that no one had woken up (including my boyfriend), I came to the conclusion that it was a ghost.

As we reached the early morning hours things quieted down slowly, and I finally felt calm enough to sleep. Prior to this I hadn’t moved or closed my eyes, despite being buried under the blankets. At this point I decided to finally roll over and go back to sleep. The moment I moved however I heard someone start. From the opposite side of the room someone ran; I could hear each individual footstep. They jumped up on the bed and on top of me, and within a split second there was a knife in my throat. Not a knife to my throat, but in it. I felt the blade slide in and cut through skin and muscle. I tried to speak, to cry out, but only sickening, wet noises came out. The feeling was one I couldn’t even begin to explain, other than to say it was real. I wasn’t just seeing this or even sensing something emphatically, I was feeling my throat being slit.

I remained awake for the last hour or so until morning, and as soon as light returned to the room I got up. I tentatively asked my boyfriend if he’d heard anything the night before, to which he replied a sleepy no. I then asked him where his valuables were and went to check. The other side of the room wasn’t disturbed at all, everything was exactly where we’d left it the night before. I got dressed and left, only to return again that night and explain things to him. I actually ended up crying as I discussed what happened at the end, as the experience had been so frightening. We both speculated the instance had something to do with the button rather than our normal farmer ghost. It had felt completely different, and further examination showed that the button was placed where the individual had been rummaging the night before.

There was no further activity at my boyfriend’s house, and I took the button home and tucked it away. Time passed, and the button was tucked under my bed in storage with a few other items. By this point I’d completely forgotten about the button. Then at the beginning of July I began to sense something in my house. At first it was very nondescript, just the feeling of a presence. Form there though it branched out rapidly. I would feel confusion and loss, as if the person didn’t know why they were here. I could catch small glimpses of them that soon grew. The figure was in a dark shirt and pants, and at times appeared standing on my porch or in the living room.

My puppy Bear also seemed to sense something at the time. He began to get very nervous in certain areas of the house as certain times. For a while he wouldn’t enter our larger living room, or would only stay if I was there. At one point we were playing with a toy and he suddenly stopped mid-fetch and froze. He dropped the toy and began to bark at the room behind me, and wouldn’t come any further. I had seen a shadow in the room and assumed it was the ghost visiting again. This continued for a few days until one night when I was home alone with our two dogs. I spent the night watching movies, and then settled down the animals and myself around midnight. My puppy was tucked into his crate and soon fast asleep, and all the doors were locked and windows shut.

A few hours later around 3am by my cell phone’s clock, I was woken up by the sound of steps. Again this felt very real at first. It sounded like someone walking through the hallway and heading to my room. Initially I thought I was dreaming, and was about to ignore it when my dog woke up. My puppy had very specific barks that meant different things. There was a happy bark, one for food, another for play, and one very distinguishable bark for when someone was at the door or approaching. Bear woke up and began to use that last bark, and the footsteps stopped briefly. They started up again after a moment and headed into the room and for my bed. I began my standard protection chant and the steps stopped, and Bear ceased to bark. I continued this for some time, stopping only when light finally came into the room from dawn.

When I finally got up and went downstairs, I found the living room (the same that Bear barked in) had been trashed. The blanket that was normally on the couch was strewn across the room. Papers, my jewelry, and the television controls had been knocked off the table and were scattered around the room. The batteries were even removed from the controls and tossed separately. The rest of the house remained untouched, and there was nothing missing or broken to suggest and intruder.

The more general disturbances continued after that, with the entity making its presence known in the upstairs hallway or some of the downstairs rooms. Bear was particularly affected, refusing to even remain in the kitchen to eat if I wasn’t there. I continued to sense and see something on occasion, though it suddenly seemed more focused on bothering Bear. I eventually sat down and spoke aloud to the spirit, telling it that it couldn’t bother my dog any longer. I told the entity it could stay, and I’d even help it if there was something I could do, but that any more interactions with my dog would force me to ban the spirit from the house. After that the entity stopped bother Bear and it quieted down considerably.

Several months later I began to have the same experiences again. I would wake up in the middle of the night to hear footsteps outside my door, but they did not attempt to come inside again. I had done a very quick blessing and doorway protection spell so that it had to stay outside. Around that time I began to look my records over and realized that this manifestation was very similar to that which I experienced at my boyfriend’s house. When I looked up the initial date it began here, I found that it coincided with a major Civil War battle, which my soldier could possibly have been involved in.

Since then the activity has died down again, but it has left me wondering what to do with the button. There is now no way to reunite it with the remaining pieces if they are even still in existence. I’d considered burying it, but I’m not sure that’s even a good idea. The concept of a haunted item is not a new one in the paranormal world or even to any major culture. Cases of haunted items have popped up in just about every century and all around the world. From dolls to paintings to music boxes, these items have been connected to hauntings much like my button. If the soldier died in this uniform or simply saw it as important and now it is being sold piecemeal, I can understand his frustration. Perhaps time will help reveal his true intent and a path for me to take in this case.

It's that time of year...

I mentioned last week that Uri and I were off to do some "ghost hunting" at my sister's house.  She'd been experiencing some increasingly uncomfortable activity, and asked if I could come by and "work some mojo."  I took Uri along with me because he is my resident anti-ghost doll.  In general spirits won't mess with any of my dolls, but Uri is one that projects a very strong "go away" feeling around him.  So if I have him with me, the ghosts will generally stay a certain distance away.

The activity seems to be consistent with what I had previously experienced when I lived there.  I believe it is the Civil War ghost I encountered last year that I discussed in this post.  She has heard the same kinds of footsteps and movement, coupled with an odd feeling of there being a male presence.  She has also most disturbingly heard a male voice when there is no man in the house, and heard our mother talking in her sleep to something that responds in that same voice.  My mother has no memory of these experiences, and pretty much dismisses the whole thing on principle.  However my sister was frightened and disturbed.

I took Uri and went through my normal process of cleansing and blessing the room.  I put Uri in the center and called to each element and my own deities for protection.  The moment I did that, the room went up at least ten degrees in temperature.  I had no recording equipment unfortunately, but I went from shivering to being hot enough to take off my sweater.

I saged the room, and went about doing my blessing (private ritual).  The room definitely felt better afterwards, not only warmer but safer.  When I was done I stepped out of the room to leave, and I could feel a palpable difference just between the hallway and her room.  I retrieved Uri, and from then on walking was like stepping through thick fog.  The sensation of stepping through something not quite physical, but definitely present.

Since then I've gone back to the house a few times to access some boxes I have stored there, and I can tell that the ghost is still present.  I was in the garage looking through boxes yesterday, and heard the distinct sound of footsteps on the driveway, and then across the leaves that were in front of the door.  I figured someone had come home without me hearing their car, but when I looked up nobody was there.  Further inspection revealed no cars in the driveway but mine.  That happened a couple more times while I was still in the garage, and the sound was very plainly someone walking.

The button is still at my mother's house in storage, which is probably why the ghost is still active.  That and the facts that I'm no longer there to pay attention, and that my mother took down all the protective charms/etc. when I moved.  It took him a couple months, but he seems to be back in full swing now.  I told my sister to keep me posted on how she is feeling, and that I would try and figure out what to do with the button long-term.

Auren's Arrival

Auren lived up to his slightly mischievous character by being delayed to ship until the day of the eclipse, and then once he shipped, the USPS site immediately went down. When it did come back up, he had mysteriously disappeared for a day or so, until he magically reappeared in the system. A little nerve wracking as the expectant "parent," but he did finally make it safely home. (I should also add that the seller was super supportive and helpful throughout this process, which made things a lot better!)

His box arrived at the same time as the packages containing his boxers and his wig/clothes from Denverdoll.

Goodies!

First peek at the box, it's so pretty!

He came with his CoA, minifee guide, and post cards. (And a wig!)

And here he is in all his shamelessly naked glory.

Standing!

I then proceeded to play a bit of dress up to see what worked and what didn't for him. Initially the wig I ordered for him didn't seem right, but it appears to depend on how you put it on. It can look too fluffy if it's not on correctly. Even still, he claimed the brown wigs as his own for now at least. Though I have to say he looks good in most of the darker colors. The white skin resin is yellowed, but you can tell it's more white when you put him in lighter wigs.

See, too fluffy.

Pretty, but oh so blonde.

Now this one I can get into!

He even looks good in blue!

A shot with his new eyes, which are the Blueblood Doll ones featured in a prior post. They look quite different depending upon the light. The brown outer ring naturally looks much more yellow, and the grey is darker. But in the doll they are much more brown. The edge of the outer ring also has a very subtle line of gold that is only visible in some lights. Overall I'm really pleased with them.

So he's here, and he's already won me over. He does need to be restrung, sueded, and probably have his face up wiped at some point as it's pretty stained/messy. Even still, he's quite charming, and just the perfect size. He fits into everything I already have in my msd wardrobe fairly well, with only a few pieces looking a bit big. After feeling out his character a bit, I will need to get him some button up shirts as that's more his style.

The Haunted Vessel: Stewardship

The thing about belief is that it is a double-edged sword.  If for example you say you believe in inanimate objects being more than just “things,” it opens to door to much more than you might expect.  Do we then have a responsibility to these items?  Does that depend on what they are?  Or perhaps what is attached to them?  And where does the line get drawn?  I won’t begin to suggest that I have all (or even most) the answers, but they are interesting questions.

This topic has come up periodically at Den of Angels, in various threads regarding the care and even storage of a doll.  In general people seem to view these dolls as needing special treatment because of their price at least, while others also look at it from the vessel point of view.*  Questions are asked on how one should care for the dolls...where should you keep them?  Is it “abuse” to treat them poorly?  Are you obligated to keep your first doll?

Another question that arises applies more to some of the dolls and/or items I’ve featured here before, like Anabelle or Robert.  If you know that an item is potentially dangerous, do you then have a responsibility to make sure it doesn't harm anyone else?  And, if you believe for example that an item is haunted by a particular spirit, what do you do?

The Warrens were one couple that were well known for not only their work with the paranormal, but also their collection of items.  They became the stewards of many items that were involved in hauntings, were possessed, were cursed, or had any other kind of bad energy attached.  They took Anabelle with them after the investigation concluded, and secured her in a glass case in their object room.  They were always very adamant about the importance of keeping these objects safely away from the public.

This also brings up an associate of theirs, John Zaffis.  Zaffis is perhaps most well known for his show on the SciFi channel Haunted Collector, and his museum where he houses the objects.  This show and Zaffis himself are actually quite controversial in the paranormal community, not so much because of the items but because of his practices.  People have questioned the validity of his investigations, and the process that often involves him taking a very expensive item from a client without really providing any compensation.

I have encountered this topic with my own dolls, as well as a few items that have come into my possession over the years.  One is a button from a Civil War soldier uniform, and the other is a ring.  In the case of the former, I feel an obligation to keep it safe until I can figure out what the best course of action is for it.  The latter on the other hand I have spent years working with, and it is finally to a place where it seems to have run its course, and is relatively harmless.  I won’t be giving it away by any means (if not for sentimental reasons alone), but I’m glad to have gotten it to a safer status.

*The idea that the doll has a soul/is a vessel for a kind of soul.

Wicked Stitchery Spring Bag

Wicked Stitchery does this great event where they sell blind bags, much like the ones that Dollheart does. You pay a flat fee of either $25 or $50, choose a size, and receive twice the amount you paid for in clothes. I ordered Uri a $50 bag last week and it arrived today. We were pleasantly surprised with the results. :)

We received three vests (burgundy/brown, purple, black), a pair of brown striped pans, a white jersey with hot pink skulls, and a black button up shirt with white kanji.

Uri seems satisfied with his new wardrobe choices. :)

Bag opening!

The Wicked Stitchery Halloween grab bag came in yesterday, and I decided to do a little "bag opening" for it.

Arashi and the bag.

Big stack of goodies!

*Amazing* pea coat (seriously, I'm in love) and a nicely made button up skull shirt.

Second package with a long sleeve black t-shirt, a green hoodie, and a pair of jeans.  Alas the black shirt doesn't really fit him very well, so I will probably end up trading that to someone.  It's very nice, but extremely tiny!

Some action shots :)

And after all the excitement, we decided to watch 9 with my sister.

And a quick shot of him this morning with his other wig.
