A few things that are neither here nor there...

X-Men! I just happen to like this logo in particular.
But Emmanuel comes from the present-day X-Men.
The more work I do with Emmanuel, the more I really enjoy him both as a doll and as a character.  He's really quite versatile character-wise, which is something new to me.  His character creation actually grew out of a conversation I had with VampireAngel13 in the comments of one of her blog posts about her X-Men au dolls.  I had Ghost and was sort of hemming and hawing about who or what he was.  We were chatting about character dolls and the X-Men, and I mentioned I was thinking of making him into some sort of X-Men themed doll.  She said go for it, and from that Ghost/Emmanuel was born.

One of my favorite images from the art books,
and what some of Emmanuel's SM alter ego is inspired by.
He certainly embodies the character I created, and my Nanowrimo writing sprung from that.  But at the same time he retains his parallel story line from the X-Men universe I created as well.  And, I've been crafting him a bit of an image and costume as an AU Bunny from Sailor Moon.  I'd been toying with the idea since I gave him his moon mark on his forehead, and this new pink and white wig has only made that curiosity stronger.*

For most of my dolls, they tend to have one persona, and that's it.  I can throw that character into different situations including different "worlds" if you will, but they don't fundamentally change.  Emmanuel though seems to take well to changing and evolving, without losing who he is, which is quite nice.  Now to just make him all the outfits he needs to fulfill these different roles!

*This kind of came together in a funny way.  When I first got Emmanuel (then Ghost), he was heavily inspired by Sailor Moon.  In particular I modeled him after both Luna and Artemis.  I'm not sure what about him said "guardian cat," but it did. That's part of why I gave him his moon mark. From there the wig further inspired me because in the manga Bunny's hair is seen not only as blonde, but pink and white as well.  Also, in his own story, Emmanuel receives the nickname "Rabbit" from one of his significant others.

New Eyes Preview

Nothing fancy, but I wanted to get a few shots of Emmanuel's new eyes.  They look awesome! :D

New Eyes

"Purple haze," by MoC
I decided to purchase Ghost some new eyes, as the blue pupil-less pair just didn't fit right.  It's amazing how bjd eyes can be like jeans...all the same size and yet they all fit differently!  The blue were also 18mm, but they have a very high dome.  Consequently they can't really be positioned up at all, at least not without causing weird gaps.  Over the past week I've tried at least ten pairs of eyes on him (in him?), and all but one pair have similar problems.

Ghosts eye wells are strange, as I've mentioned before.  He's an older sculpt, and so some of his features are uneven or sized strangely.  His eyes are definitely two different shapes, and the insides even more so.  As such I find it hard to put him in eyes with a sold black pupil, because one always looks the wrong way.  I really like the red/orange eyes I've shown here before, as they fit him perfectly and look good.  But he's really not a red/orange kind of guy.  Blue, pink, purple, grey...definitely.  Red, yellow, orange...not so much.  So I picked up another pair of Mint on Card Inc eyes with same-colored pupils.  I've found that MoC eyes seem to fit his eye wells just right, so all I needed was the right color.  I hemmed and hawed between the purple and the pink, but the ones I chose were a little more neutral so they can work on a few different levels.

Unstrung Hero Bjd blind bags!

I purchased two of FunnyLori's "blind" wig bags, which were $10 for two wigs.  These are the results!

A blond, love this one!

Another shot just because.

A brunette, so/so. Needs more styling definitely.

The elusive "cookie dough" I believe it's called? Needs more styling as well.

And this amazingly awesome white and pink one. Love!

At the end I went to wash a smudge off his face, and ended up taking off his whole face up which was unplanned, but probably a good thing. He could use a good wash and a new face.

Blank face!

What's up with Volks?

Volks USA store.
There's been a lot of developments lately with Volks that I've been following along with in a sort of third-party way.  All my Volks dolls sans Fumiko were bought second hand for a number of reasons, in particular because Volks is expensive and they do not allow any layaway programs.  So while I've been keeping an eye on it, I hadn't really focused on it closely. Until now.

At the end of last year, Volks announced it was discontinuing all of its standard models.  This was kind of sad for me because I always wanted a Megu head, but there was no way I was getting a full doll before the end of the sales period.  For those unfamiliar with Volks and the way they do things... Basically the Volks site (Japanese and USA) featured a number of "standard" mod
Volks Megu
els you could buy blank or with face ups.  They were very simple, and came in both MSD and SD sizes.  Volks also sold dolls via events, lotteries, auctions, etc.  So in order to purchase one of the rarer dolls, you needed to win a chance.

On the flip side they have the full choice system (FCS) which is where two of my boys originally came from (Ghost and Nowell).  This system gives you a range of head sculpts, body options, hands/feet options, eyes, wigs, and super customized make-up.  You have a consult with someone in one of the locations and they take down every last detail.  You then either have the doll shipped to you (if you do it in Japan they only ship in Japan) or pick it up at a Volks store.  This allows for almost endless possibilities, and the ability to get some head sculpts you wouldn't otherwise be able to.

As mentioned above, Volks Japan does not allow you to ship FCS orders outside of Japan.  So either you go through a shopping service, or make a friend in Japan who will then ship it to you.  The alternative for those in the USA is to visit the LA store and place an order in person there.  I had always hoped to visit the store as it is not far from where my best friend lives.  I have planned on getting an FCS doll, and almost went through a shopping service once.  I'd prefer to do it in person, which is why I was waiting for an LA visit.

Unfortunately at the beginning of this year, Volks USA announced it would be closing it's LA store at the end of March.  This upset a lot of people for obvious reason, and many rushed to make plans to visit.  Then, just a few days ago, Volks LA announced it would be changing the dates of its closure and moving them up, to mid-March.  They also set a date at which FCS orders were finishing, further crunching the available time.  I know people on the DoA Volks threads that are pretty upset about this.  Volks is difficult enough to order from already, and to add this to the mix makes it even more frustrating.  I have also heard from several people that Volks USA is currently liquidating it's store stock, and closing down many of its online accounts.  Coupling that with the fact that there is all new staff, people are feeling rather uncomfortable.

The hope is that Volks is doing this to make way for a more accessible ordering system.  There have been s
ome hints at an updated FCS system, though nothing concrete.  People are hoping FCS will be available for ordering online, with shipping options to everywhere.  And/or that Volks USA will still keep at least a warehouse open so that people can order from the US rather than paying shipping from Japan.  Which is supposedly what Volks is planning, but it seems a lot of things are up in the air.

Ghost to be the last?
What this means for someone like me is that I have probably (unfortunately) bought my last Volks doll.  Now I *love* Volks, I love their aesthetics and their "mythology."  However they have always been some of the pricier dolls out there, and now they are heading towards completely un-affordable territory.  I cannot afford to participate in any of the lotteries (an "entry fee" of $100-200 for a chance to win the opportunity to buy a $1000+ doll), and more likely than not unless FCS goes online, I will now never do one.

It also affects the resale market, of which I am a part.  I have browsed the MP a few times for Volks heads, and the prices have skyrocketed.  Megu heads are now several hundred dollars, and I have yet to see a head under $100.  Which to me is pricey, even knowing how expensive this hobby is.

I'm saddened to see Volks upsetting so many loyal customers, though obviously I don't consider myself in that boat as most of my Volks purchases are secondhand.  Still, I've noticed how opinions have shifted as of late, and how many people are just plain upset.  Hopefully they will take care of their long-time customers and give the rest of us more options in the future.

Goofing around with Ghost...

I keep starting updates, and then getting called away by work or personal stuff.  But I'm going to finish this one, really!

Unfortunately my computer has been felled by the combination of a virus and some mechanical issues inherent to the computer.  It's an older laptop and has had a pretty good run.  I will eventually re-work it into a desktop of sorts, but for now I need something that functions.  So I'm taking my tax return money and getting myself a Chromebook!  And any leftover "fun" money will go to the dolls.  I'm not sure there will be much, but we'll see.

In slightly more productive news, Arashi's new eyes/wig have arrived.  Of course I managed to delete the picture I had of his eyes, but here is one of the wig.  I purchased it from FunnyLori's Etsy shop, UnstrungHero BJD.  She shipped really fast, and the wig is spectacular.  Definitely one of the best if not the best fur wig I've received, and that's including my fave (Spite and Malice).  I went back this weekend and ordered two blind bags for Ghost, because I need some more SD wigs anyway and he could use some options.  It's a fantastic deal too, $10 for two wigs (normally $10 a piece) and shipping is very inexpensive. They've already shipped and might arrive today! (I checked while writing this, and it arrived a few moments ago!)

I will do little review with the wigs, so people can get an idea of the blind bags and the quality.
